How can you tell if a state is red or blue?

Look at who won the state for president and by how much. Only 8 states were decided by under 5 points in 2024.

Red means Republican and blue means Democratic, a color code American media settled on after the 2000 election. Our state pages use the 2024 margin: 15 or more points is solid, 5 to 15 is firm and under 5 is purple.
